Why use hashtags?
Unless your account is set to private, you’re probably looking to grow your Instagram account, increasing your engagement (likes, comments, views) and following. Hashtags is a key way to do this -we’ve actually covered it in great detail in our free Instagram Hashtag Cheat Sheet.
In short, hashtags ‘expose’ your posts and stories to more people that are following it, increasing visibility and possibly attracting more followers. On our best posts, we get up to 80% more views through hashtags, so they are essential for success!
Creating your nature hashtag recipe
Now if you’re just going to use all the most popular hashtags I’m sorry to deliver some bad news: you might not see any results. Instagram’s algorithm is constantly changing but it’s definitely always true that it’s difficult to find yourself in the Top 9 for a hashtag if it’s very competitive. So, a hashtag like #nature with 457 million posts would be significantly more difficult than, say, #appreciatenature, which has only 75,000.
The best way to see which hashtags work for you is to mix it up! Try different volumes of hashtags to see if you can trend.
Here’s our personal recipe for hashtags. It includes a mix of 28 hashtags, so you can add 2 ‘wildcards’ to make up your maximum 30 hashtags.
- 7-8 very popular hashtags – think 100 – 500k posts but no more than 1 million
- 7-8 popular hashtags – try hashtags with over 10k but definitely less than 100k
- 5-6 niche hashtags – think about your niche. Are you in the travel industry, or just love clothing and style? Choose hashtags related to your image and your industry or focus
- 3-4 branded hashtags – wearing a specific dress or shoes? What about being in a specific region or area? Find hashtags for the brand or for the place you’re in
- 1 own hashtag – use your account name as your own hashtag. You never know when you’ll grow big enough for other Instagram accounts to use it!
Using Instagram search for nature and related keywords
More than just using the list we’ve given you, it’s good to consider other elements of your picture. Does it have a beautiful sky, or a sunset, or a rainbow perhaps?
You can either use a hashtag generator to find related words – we like All Hashtag and Instavast (where you can even upload a picture to get suggestions). But, actually the best (totally free!) way to find good nature hashtags is to use the search functionality right at your fingertips: Instagram search!
We have found that the best tool on the market is Hashtags For Likes – there is a small monthly fee but you can cancel anytime, and the results you get are far better than any free tool on the market.
In the example below we’ve used one of the very popular hashtags #naturephotos and it has given us some great options including #naturephotoshoot (70k posts) and #naturephotoportal (176k).
The Best Nature Tag for Feature Accounts
Beyond using a hashtag recipe, another way to increase reach on your account is to work with so-called Instagram Feature Accounts. These are community or ‘hub’ accounts which feature great posts in their niche.
Increasingly some of these accounts ask you to pay for their feature but there are still heaps of free accounts out there, looking for good content.
Getting your post featured by one of these accounts involves a number of steps including the right hashtag, photo tagging and messaging, which we have covered in our Guide to Getting Featured here.

Bonus: Using nature hashtags in your Instagram stories & carousel posts
You know what Instagram Stories are great for? TESTING! You can use different nature hashtags in your stories and see which ones perform best. Make sure you change your account to a Business or Creator account, and you’ll get Instagram Insights, which shows you how many people have viewed your Stories. Try a different hashtag with each story frame and see which ones gets the most views…
We also thought it was worth bringing up an Instagram ‘bug’ that you might not be aware of. When you post a carousel post in your feed, i.e. a post which has more than one photograph, usually the hashtags won’t work at all. Our suggestion? Test and try it out!

You can insert a maximum of 30 hashtags in your posts. However, it’s worth trying lower numbers and mixing it up.

Simple, just search the hashtag in Instagram’s search bar, and you’ll find all the photos sorted by Top and by Recent.
Should I put the nature hashtags in the caption or the comment?
Either is fine. After extensive testing there seems to be no difference in how Instagram treats hashtags whether in the caption or comment, so do whichever you prefer!
